This summer writing course is virtual. We will meet Live via Zoom in June and July 2023, 6 sessions over the course of 7 weeks, weekly, June 6 through July 18, on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 pm Eastern Time. Meeting dates are June 6 | June 13 | June 20 | June 27 | July 11 | and July 18. Our class will not meet on Tuesday, July 4.
This is the Level 2 class of Magical Craft. Please do not register unless you meet one of the following requirements:
1) You have completed Level 1.
2) You have already published at least one book of prose.
3) You have earned an MFA degree and have published at least 4 pieces of creative nonfiction.
Please do not sign up for this course unless you have significant time (at least an hour a day) to devote to your writing. The class is serious and intensive.
We'll dive deep into creative nonfiction, memoir, essay, and the flash essay. We'll explore structure and craft, focusing in turn on four levels of technique--the whole, the paragraph, the sentence, and the word. I will lay out the Kittredge schema for the essay, a crazily effective and never-before-published formula taught me by my major professor, William Kittredge. I invite you to write an essay based on this method. No matter what you write, I will edit up to 15 pages DS, Times New Roman, 12-point font of your work.
You will finish the class with at least a dozen flow-writes that include pieces of memoir.
One entire class will be devoted to learning to do a Book Proposal.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to workshop (in the Georgia style, an improved version of the Iowa style) with the entire group. Because of this, class size will be limited.
